Straight knitting needles, size 8 (5.00 mm) OR SIZE TO OBTAIN GAUGE

Fan Motif #1

With straight needles, using A, cast on 56 sts.

Row 1 (WS):  Purl.

Row 2 (RS):  K1, * k2 tog, yo, rep from * to last st, end k1.

Row 3:  Purl.

Row 4:  Knit.

Row 5: Purl.

Row 6:  Rep Row 2.

Row 7:  Purl.

Row 8:  K1, * k2 tog, rep from * to last st, end k1 – 29 sts.

Rows 9, 10 and 11:  Rep Rows 3, 4 and 5.

Row 12:  K1, * k2 tog, yo, rep from * to last 2 sts, end k2 – 29 sts.

Rows 13, 14 and 15:  Rep Rows 3, 4 and 5.

Row 16:  Rep Row 12.

Row 17:  Purl.

Row 18:  K1, * k2 tog, rep from * to last 2 sts, end k2 – 16 sts.

Rows 19, 20 and 21:  Rep rows 3, 4 and 5.

Row 22:  K1, * k2 tog, rep from * to last st, end k1 – 9 sts.

Row 23:  Purl.

Row 24:  K1, (k2 tog) 3 times, end k2 – 6 sts.

Row 25:  Purl.

Row 26:  K1, (k2 tog) twice, end k1 – 4 sts.

Row 27:  Purl.

Row 28:  (K2 tog) twice – 2 sts.

Row 29:  P2 tog.  Fasten off last st.
 

Fan Motif #2

With straight needles, using B, cast on 28 sts; with RS facing, using same hank of yarn, pick up and k28 sts along right edge of Fan Motif #1 from bottom to top – 56 sts.  Complete same as Fan Motif #1.
 

Fan Motif #3

With straight needles, using B, with RS facing, beg at top of Fan Motif #1, pick up and k28 sts along left edge of Fan Motif #1; with same hank of yarn, cast on 28 sts – 56 sts.  Complete same as Fan Motif #1.  Continuing to work Fan Motifs in this manner, add motifs in same order and with colors shown on diagram.  Note:  When completed, you will have worked a total of 28 Fan Motifs – 16 with A and 12 with B.
 

Finishing

Weave in all ends, then steam shawl using a hot steam iron and a pressing cloth.
