There are many reasons to love knitting, but for me, it's the yarn. Discovering a new yarn is so exciting! I first knit with Universal Yarn Deluxe Worsted a couple of years ago, in my Zuni Cardigan. I loved the colors the designer chose, so I copied her exactly. When I received the yarn, I was pleasantly surprised at the high quality and low price; I bought the yarn sight-unseen, so I was a little nervous.

Here are a couple of pictures of my Zuni Cardigan. It's complete but unblocked, so please excuse the wrinkles!

We sell many Universal Yarns, and our shop owner, Kelley Hobart, has knitted with them all —she loves them as much as I do. We wanted to celebrate Universal Yarn, so we're having a sale on all of it!

And to go with this discounted yarn, we've got lots of free patterns! Here are five of my favorites.

Top 5 Free Patterns for Universal Yarns

The Sugar Cubes Hat is too cute. Download the free pattern, get two balls of Universal Uptown Bulky, and you can make both hats! These are adult size hats, with a circumference of 20 inches. Uptown Bulky is a 100 percent acrylic yarn, so it's super easy to care for. It's also really nice to knit with, and doesn't feel at all like an acrylic yarn.

Bulky yarn makes for a quick project, and this hat is easily customizable for a man or a woman. If you're a beginning colorwork knitter, this is the project for you.

Speaking of bulky yarn, check out this GORGEOUS lace stole! It's the Waving Lace Stole, knit with Universal Deluxe Chunky, a 100 percent wool yarn.

I love knitting lace at larger gauges. It's just as pretty as fine lace, but it's warm, cozy, and finished fast! The Waving Lace Stole would make a great gift, if you can bear to part with it.

How cute is the Easy Baby Cardi pattern, knit with Universal Bamboo Pop? This is one of our favorite yarns. It has so many color choices and it's a dream to knit with. The 50 percent cotton, 50 percent bamboo blend is soft on baby's skin, and, bonus, it's machine washable! You need two balls to make this darling sweater. It's shown in the On Parade colorway, but it would be equally precious in a solid color, too. Cute buttons are a must!

One ball of Fibra Natura Whisper Lace makes Amy Gunderson's Gentle Waves Shawlette. Gorgeous lace on a small scale, this shawlette is perfect for transitional weather, like what we've got now. Any of the beautiful colorways of Whisper Lace would be perfection for this free shawlette pattern.

Wow! Isn't the Interlacement Sweater beautiful? I love how the lace panel splits at the neck and travels around the collar. Knit with Universal Deluxe Worsted, this will be a sweater you'll wear for years. The sizing goes from 35" bust to 55" bust, and we have plenty of sweater quantity in lots of gorgeous colors. Download your free sweater pattern and get your Deluxe Worsted today!

Well, that wraps up our top 5 free patterns for Universal Yarns. There are many more, though, so check out our free pattern page! There are some cute crochet patterns available, too.
