I developed this pattern in honor of all of those fighting breast cancer. The flame stitch pattern is to remind the knitter or the wearer to fight her battle like a firefighter battling a fire: Never give up.

Finished Measurements: 9" wide X 9½" tall, blocked

Yarn: 1 skein Malabrigo Merino Worsted (210 yds / 192 m), in Color 184 (Shocking Pink), or any soft worsted-weight yarn

Needles: US #9 / 5.5 mm

Gauge: 18 stitches = 4 inches in flame stitch pattern

A note about the chart: This is an easy lace pattern, that you will quickly memorize, but you do need to move the marker on a couple of the rounds to change the start of the row (SOR). Changing the SOR when marked on the chart will keep the lace pattern lined up correctly.

You can read more about the efforts behind this cowl on our blog

Errata: There is an error in the written directions in the first version of the pattern. Rounds 1, 3, 5, and 7 should read:

Round 1: K1, YO, K3, DVD, K3, YO
Round 3: Slip M, K1, YO, K3, DVD, K3, YO
Round 5: Slip M, K1, YO, K3, DVD, K3, YO
Round 7: Slip M, K1, YO, K3, DVD, K3, YO

If you downloaded Flames Cowl v 2, you have the updated pattern.
