How to Fix Common Knitting Mistakes (& the Simple Ribbed Hat Free Pattern!)

Fri, Mar 27, 20

Sometimes you just need an easy project to work on, and Kelley's new free pattern, the Simple Ribbed Hat, is the perfect cast-on for times like these.

We debuted this pattern on a recent Technique Tuesday on Facebook Live, and Kelley used it to demonstrated how to fix a few common mistakes knitters make all the time (even a pro-level knitter like Kelley!).

Here's a clip showing how to fix dropped stitches, turn purls into knits, and fix incorrectly oriented stitches.

These tips are great for beginning knitters or anyone who needs a little refresher course.

Knitting the Simple Ribbed Hat

Kelley designed this as a unisex hat, so it looks equally great on men and women. You can even change the size easily, simply by adding or subtracting the number of stitches you cast on in multiples of 4.

Knit this up in Bravo, our exclusive new 100 percent baby alpaca yarn; we are obsessed with it and want to use it to knit ALL THE THINGS!

The Simple Ribbed Hat begins with 4 inches of ribbing on size US 2 circular needles, then you'll switch to size US 5 needles to finish the hat. Why start on such small needles? Since alpaca yarn doesn't have much memory (it stretches and might not shrink back into place), Kelley built in the tight ribbing so it would hold its shape.

Alpaca fiber has so many characteristics that work wonderfully for this type of hat—it's super soft, it's warm (even when wet), and it has great wicking properties so you can wear it when running or performing any type of sport! We love it.

We hope you'll download our own copy of the Simple Ribbed Hat and knit it in your favorite color of Bravo. And join us every Tuesday at 9:30 am on our Facebook page for Technique Tuesday!

Cheers,
